A 19th Century workhorse finds new life as a go-anywhere look for spring

With spring just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to invest in a classic and versatile chore coat. I wear mine from Wallace & Barnes, which is approaching eight years old, whenever I run errands on the weekends, or when I can’t be bothered to think about what to wear. It’s truly the all-purpose article of clothing – throw it over a T-shirt and jeans and you’re ready to face the world. And you’ll look super chic doing it.
The origins of the chore coat date back to nineteenth century France. Durable and nondescript, the jacket was ideal for masses of laborers engaged in physical work such as railroad and farm toil. Its loose fit made it easy to throw over a set of coveralls or dungarees, and the roomy pockets could house everything from tools to cigarettes.
Today, fashion brands such as J. Crew, Buck Mason and Todd Snyder to name a few, have co-opted the style and created their own upmarket – but still casual – versions made out of linen, cotton and merino wool. Depending on the fabric, a chore coat is ideal for spring temps and can be a comfortable option for just hanging around the house or meeting a friend for coffee or even Sunday brunch.
