Let them scoff

An overshadowed Prohibition-era cocktail that deserves another look.
“Scofflaw” was the winning name of a 1923 contest held by a prohibitionist to coin a term to shame those who disobeyed the law by continuing to consume alcohol after Prohibition took effect.
A year later, Harry’s Bar in Paris began serving a cocktail by the same name, and while it’s been eclipsed by other prohibition-era concoctions like the Sazerac or French75, the Scofflaw should be added to your cocktail list. A pleasing blend of rye whisky, which has come back in favor, and vermouth, among other ingredients make it a refreshing, yet complex alternative to the overexposed Old Fashion and Manhattan.

{Scofflaw}
Ingredients
2 oz. Rye whiskey
1 oz. Dry vermouth
¼ oz. Fresh lemon juice
½ oz. Grenadine
2 dashes Orange bitters
1 lemon peel
Prep:
Add all the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass such as a coupe. Twist and garnish with a lemon peel.
